Steam holiday sale

The steam holiday sale ended January 2nd. There were a lot of good games on sale, there were also a lot of slaps in the face.

Dead island went on sale just before the holiday sale for less then during the holiday sale.

Valve / Steam ran out of third party coupons. This means towards the end, people were receiving coupons for Valve games.

The Valve coupons expire March 2012.

The valve coupons are not valid for valve games released after January 1, 2012.

What kind of deal is that? The only people benefiting from those coupons are people new to Steam and Valve games.

I have been buying Valve games since the late 1990s. The coupons are nothing but wasted pixels on my screen, as I already have just about all valve games. The only games I am missing are day of defeat source, and half-life source. I am not interested in either game and have no intention on buying them.

Valve has not released a game in over 2 years - with the exception of portal 2.

Where is half-life 3, left 4 dead 2,,, heck where are the fixes for the glitches and exploits in left 4 dead 1 & 2? How about I trade my coupons for a tank fix in dead center 1?

Then there is the issue with people who created dozens, if not hundreds of accounts to get the free items.

Maybe the holiday sale for 2012 will have better stuff then the 2011 sale.

Thinking of buying a new 45acp

Owning a 1911 style pistol is something that I have always wanted to do. Ever since I shot a colt 1911 way back around 1984 or 1985, I knew I wanted one.

The thing is, I have never taken the time to buy a 1911. Its one of those things that you say you "want" to do, but never actually take the time to do.

Years ago I owned a Ruger P90. Sometime around 2003 my wife and I fell on hard times. The pistol hwas sold to catch up on bills.

Selling firearms is something I do as a last resort. At this time I am 43 years old, and have only had to sell 3 firearms during my adult life, and all three sells I regret. Some of the firearms I had to sell over the past 25 years - Ruger mini-14 with folding stock, Ruger P90, 410+22 long rifle combo shotgun rifle.

Besides the firearms, somehow several my my firearms "disappeared" during the divorce to my first wife. Some of the firearms that came up missing included a Colt AR15 (preban 1990s model), H&K SP89, Maudi AK47, Ruger P91, Mossberg shotgun, Winchester singleshot 410 and Ruger Mini-30.

I wish I would have had the serial numbers so I could have filed a claim on my home owners insurance. Let this be a lesson to you, keep a list of your firearm serial numbers somewhere besides your home. Keep 2 or 3 list at a friends house. You never know when you could go home and everything be cleaned out.

I want a new 45acp pistol, and this time I want a 1911. The 1911 is more then “just” a pistol or a handgun, its an American tradition. Owning a 1911 is like owning a chevy, ford or dodge, its just one of those things that defines what its like to be a US citizen.

The question is, what make and model 1911 do I get?

My first choice, based on a recommendation from the buddy of mine was the Rock Island 1911. But after doing some research, I found out the Rock Island 1911 is not made in the USA. When given the choice, I would like to buy made in the USA products.

Lance, over at the Gun Slinger told me he had a Remington 1911 R1 in stock. The plans are to make it over to the Gun Slinger in the next couple of weeks to take a look at the R1 and to get a feel for it.

I would like to add a light to the R1, but the pistol does not have a rail on it. But since the R1 does not come with a rail,,, what can I do? I can either add an after market rail, something that clamps to the trigger guard, or buy a 1911 with a factory rail. My ideal setup would be a light + tritium sights. But if I have to go with just the tritium sights, then so be it; I keep a 3 D cell maglight under my side of the bed, + an LED on the computer desk.

Something else I have not mentioned, I like to bring a pistol while camping on the deer lease or camping on the river. If something wonders into the camp site, I would like to be able to protect myself and the people that are with me. I have been carrying a beretta 9mm, but would like to upgrade. Mostly what I am concerned about are animals with rabies, coyotes, snakes,,, stuff like that.

Even though I like the 9mm, I miss owning a 45. There is just something about shooting a 45 that makes it a pleasure to fire off a few rounds.

I will keep yall updated as things progress.

Catching bowfin on juglines

While on a recent fishing trip, I had an unexpected surprise, bowfins seem to like vienna sausage.

Bowfin, also known as Grindle, Grinnel, Mud Fish and Cypress bass are considered a trash fish by a lot of people. There is something about the meat so that it can not be frozen. If the meat is frozen, it crumbles.

I threw some juglines out in a slough that was maybe 8 feet deep. Came back an hour later only to find 2 bowfins on 2 different jugs.

Keep your fingers away from the mouth of the bowfin, they have teeth. Bowfins are one of the few freshwater fish with teeth.

The lines on the jugs were anywhere from 2 - 8 feet deep.

I was using Circle hooks instead of regular J hooks. The circle hook causes the hook not to get hung in the stomach of the fish. The hook is swallowed, comes back out, then gets caught in the mouth of the fish.

Plans for 2012

As I look forward to 2012, there are certain things that come to mind.

As in previous years, one of my goals is to get in shape and lose weight - like the majority of most people. At 43 years old I am probably the worst shape of my life. I blame my own laziness and my office job.

When I was working in the welding field, I was on my feet for 8 - 12 hours a day doing hard physical labor. Keeping the weight off was pretty easy when you are walking several miles a day.

Something that puts the pounds on is drinking, and I can drink a good bit sometimes. When a beer has 150 calories, drinking 3 or 4 in one night can really add up the calories.

At christmas my nephew asked when we were going on another hiking trip. The thing is, I am so bad out of shape, going on a 9+ mile tip would be rough, very rough.

I guess I need to get down to the park to walk a few laps.

Changes in the world

With the sopa act, its become clear that big business runs the US government.

North korea had a change of leadership

Hopefully we are going to have a new president elected in 2012. The worst thing that can happen is if obama gets reelected.

Guantanamo Bay is still open where people are being held without due process of law.

The federal reserve is still printing money out of thin air.

The US government has borrowed more money then the tax payers can ever hope to payback.

Tensions with Iran are on the rise (as usual).

The US manufacturing base is depleted.

China now has the US manufacturing base.

The average US citizen probably does not realize how dependent we are on other nations. Flooding in Taiwan made the prices of hard drives double. It makes me wonder what would happen if we went to war with china, or if a nuke was detonated in a major US city.

What has me worried is the change of leadership in north korea. Some 20 year old young man now holds the key to nuclear weapons.

Climate change

One thing that really has me worried in the Texas drought. Some predictions say the south could be in for another 10 years of drought. If we think the price of food is bad now, add 2 or 3 years of lost crops into the equation.

My wife and I try to stock up on can goods when they go on sale. One of the plans for 2012 is to keep stocking up on food whenever possible.

February and March should tell us if we are in for another dry year. If we do not get rain in March, we are probably in for a rough ride for the summer of 2012.

Being out on the river

There is no way to describe being out on the river, the sound of the boat motor, the water rushing under the hull of the boat.

To drive on a road is to go where man said you should go.

To be on the water is to go where GOD and nature said you should go.

Water never has pot holes, but it does have waves, wind and rain.

Like riding a motorcycle, there is just something about the wind in your face. But in this case, you are on the water.

Being on the river, and going into sloughs is like going back in time. When summer rolls around and the gators come out, its like back in time 10,000 years. I often wonder what people who lived thousands of years ago lived their lives. How did they fish, what did they think of gators and snakes.

Fishing with noodles

Over the course of the past few months I have been working on juglines, also called "noodles".

I started off with some noodle material you can pick up at the local china mart. Cut a piece of 3/4 inch pcv pipe about 1.75 inches longer then the noodle, glue a cap on one end of the noodle, drill a 1/4 - 5/16 hole in the other end.

Here is the end result. This video was filmed while on a 3 day camping trip in December 2011.

2012 is upon us

As 2012 is upon us, I figured it would be a good time to open a new blog. With this new blog, I hope to reflect, and look forward.

2011 was not a bad year, its just a year I hope not to repeat. My youngest son and my daughter and I had a falling out.

My youngest son and I are talking again, but my daughter is still mad at me. Mad at what, I do not know. When my daughter opens her mouth, her words are not her own, but the are the words of my ex-wife.

Maybe one day my daughter and I will reconnect.

Some of the things I hope to do in 2012 are improve my health and improve my standard of living.

My youngest son turns 18 in 2012. Hopefully I can get his part of the child support behind me.

Dealing with the Texas child support office has been nothing short of a nightmare. Like the time the child support office raised the amount I was supposed to be paying for no reason, and with no due process. They just sent me a letter saying I owed more money and was raising my payments. After calling the child support office and complaining, they agreed to return to what the court order said I was supposed to be paying.

What got me, the stupid people at the child support office wanted to bypass the "due process" part of our legal system. No person shall be devoid of life, liberty or property without due process. I guess the people who wanted to raise my child support that time slept though that part of government class.

Non-custodial parents have to provide insurance and support payments, while dead-beat custodial parents can sit on their ass at home and not do a single thing.

Raising children takes a joint effort on the behalf of both parents, and not just one or the otehr.
